In Conversation With Deborah Symond O’Neil

Founder of Mode Sportif, Deborah Symond O’Neill is known for her discerning eye and considered approach to curation. We spoke with Deborah about what drew her to Jets

Mode Sportif is known for its considered product curation. What was it about Jets that resonated with you, and why did it feel right for your customer?

Jets has such a strong heritage in Australian swimwear, but what really resonated with me was the brand’s commitment to quality, craftsmanship and timeless design. The pieces feel elevated and relevant, striking that balance between being on-trend yet enduring. That aligns perfectly with Mode Sportif’s philosophy of offering investment pieces our customer can return to season after season. Jets feels confident, refined and considered, which mirrors the lifestyle of the Mode woman.

Resortwear has evolved beyond holiday dressing. How do you see the category living in a woman’s everyday wardrobe today?

Resortwear today is much more about versatility. Women want pieces that move seamlessly between moments, worn poolside, styled back with everyday essentials, or layered into their daily wardrobe. Swimwear becomes a foundation piece, worn as a bodysuit, while resort separates are designed to be lived in, not saved for a suitcase. It’s about ease, adaptability and feeling polished without overthinking it.

Do you have any standout favourites from the Jets collection?

I’m drawn to the beautifully cut one-pieces, they’re incredibly flattering and feel timeless. I also love the understated resortwear pieces that can be worn beyond the beach, the kind of items you can throw on for lunch, travel in, or style effortlessly throughout the day. They’re easy, refined and very wearable.

Where do you find inspiration outside of fashion?

Travel is a constant source of inspiration for me, along with architecture, art and interiors. I’m also inspired by women, how they live, move and dress in real life. Observing how pieces are worn day-to-day often influences how I think about curation and styling far more than runway trends.

Lastly, our swim and resortwear is designed to travel with you. Where are you dreaming of heading next?

I’m dreaming of St Tropez for long poolside days and effortless summer dressing, and Paris for fashion, culture and a little fun. Both destinations really capture that balance between ease and refinement that I’m always drawn to.
