In conversation with Christelle Scifo from Fleurette

Christelle Scifo, founder of Fleurette, is a multidisciplinary creative based in Fairlight on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Her work moves between flowers, fashion, interiors, art and still life, creating considered visual worlds shaped by her instinctive eye and distinctive aesthetic.

We spoke with Christelle about her creative journey, the influence of florals in her work and her response to the Bloom Collection.

Tell us a little about yourself and your studio. How did your journey into floristry begin?

My love of flowers began early, surrounded by my aunties, who were avid gardeners and painters, and a father whose French culture and background in hospitality and the arts brought beauty, food and creativity into our everyday life.

I spent much of my early twenties living in Paris, and the beauty of the city, its gardens, language and culture have stayed with me.

What does a typical day in the studio look like for you?

No two days are ever quite the same, which I love. Usually there’s an early flower market, coffee and a chat with my local growers to see what’s beautiful and at its best that week.

From there I’m back to my Fairlight studio, preparing flowers, sourcing and styling, or heading out to an event or installation. I try to weave in a Pilates class, a walk or swim in the ocean and usually a coffee at my local boatshed spot.

The work can be incredibly physical and fast-paced, so those slower rituals are important to me. Being close to the water and nature keeps me grounded and constantly feeds back into my creativity and inspiration.

Flowers have always been present in my world and naturally became my creative medium, Fleurette is a very personal extension of all of those influences.

What stood out to you creatively when you first saw the Bloom collection?

Naturally, the florals. Especially the silk printed sarongs. Also the femininity, textures and feeling of spring that immediately spoke to me.

I love that moment when the season begins to turn, the light changes, the days get longer, there’s more colour and everything starts to come alive again including the flowers.

There’s a beautiful movement and palette through the Bloom prints that I connected with, i immediately imagined them amongst seasonal spring flowers, with the florals and fabrics almost growing and moving into one another.

Our Bloom collection is inspired by the effortless beauty of nature. As someone who works with flowers every day, how does nature influence your creativity and personal style?

Nature is at the heart of everything I do. I love the undulation of nature and flowers that have their own movement, nothing too forced or perfect. My favourite arrangements feel as though they could have just been gathered from a garden.

I work intuitively with the seasons and closely with local growers, choosing what’s naturally beautiful and abundant at that particular moment. I love the transience of flowers, every season gives you something different, and there’s beauty in knowing it won't be there forever.

When you're packing for a holiday, what are your resortwear essentials?

I could happily live all summer in a swimsuit, sarong and oversized shirts.

I love beautiful one-pieces in different shapes, a great hat, sunglasses and anything with shells or pearls. I’m essentially a mermaid after growing up by the beach.

I love pieces you can really live in, from a swim to a long lunch and into the evening without thinking too much about it. Salty hair is my signature, sun-kissed skin, something beautiful but effortless. That’s pretty much my summer uniform.

Lastly, our swim and resortwear is designed to travel with you. Where are you dreaming of heading next?

I’m lucky to live in a little pocket of paradise on the Northern Beaches, so I try to bring that feeling of vacances into everyday life; the ocean, flowers, coffee by the water and those slower moments between everything else.

Paris will always be my home away from home. Nice is my father’s hometown and takes me back to family and my French roots, while Positano has been a favourite summer escape for many years. Closer to home, Byron Bay is always somewhere I love to disappear to.

I think wherever I am, I’m searching for much the same feeling, close to the ocean and nature, good food, beautiful seasonal flowers, long lunches and life moving just a little more slowly.
